IBP INDEX

What is IBP index?

The IBP index is an automatic valuation system that scores the hardness of a mountain bike, road bike, hiking or running trail.
This index is very useful to know the difficulty of different trails by comparing them.
It is very important not to confuse the difficulty of a trail with the effort that will take us to realize it: an IBP index of 60 will be a very hard trail for a debutant, normal for someone with a medium preparation and very easy for a professional.

Suffering or efforts of a trail = fitness + race pace + climatologic conditions + IBP
The index is obtained by analyzing the latitude, longitude and height data registered by a GPS device. The distances done in the different sections of ups and downs (1%, 2%,3%,4%,etc..), the total ascended and descended meters, average ratios of climb and descend, the mileage of height and the ramps’ distribution are taken into account.

Applying a standardized mathematic formula you obtain a punctuation between 0 and infinite. This punctuation is 100% objective because it doesn’t take into account subjective values such as climatology, the fitness or the race pace.

The system detects automatically how the trail has been made. Therefore, the difficulty index that is going to be obtained will be followed by the following abbreviations: BYC for cycling trails, HKG for hiking trails and RNG for running trails.

It is also possible to obtain de IBP index of a trail drawn in a map manually, as long as the trail points contain the height. In this case the index will be followed by the abbreviations DRW. However, the index obtained this way won’t have the same reliability, due to the precision mistakes when marking the points or altitude mesh’s mistakes.

STARTING A TRAIL CLUB

Group of people in the environment (from Len Hardy in www.firehole.us)

Nowadays people are more interested in environment and sports practised in it.

Consequently, local and regional governments  have changed their politics and they try to conserve it. However, it is not always this way.

An option we have to defend our local trails is to create a trail club.

WELCOME TO SPAIN!

Hi again guys!

This is a special issue to me. I will start by talking about Spain and I will finish by encouraging you to chose Marina Baixa as your next destination to visit on holiday.

Spain (from: Wikimedia Commons)

Maybe you think i am crazy. But I am sorry to say that you are wrong! Okey, I will explain it to you. This morning surfing on Internet I found a PDF from "Made for Spain" in collaboration with "Travesías".

The document tries to "share the best finds and even some secrets" of Spain to everybody. Who did this PDF is completely sure that you will change your mind about Spain after reading it and you will want to come here as soon as possible. And... why should not I tell it to you? I totally agree with them.

Would you like to know more about things it talks about?

XLC SHOES MTB CB-M06

Hi everyone!

Talking about all the mountain bike route's at the blog, I think it is important to give you information about some shoes to ride your bicycle in the best conditions.

Is for that reason for what I'm going to show you the XLC shoes MTB CB-M06:

XLC MTB CB-M06 from bikecarbono.com

The characteristics of this shoes are:
  • It are made of hide and PVC.
  • Has three velcro fastener.
  • The sole is made of Nylon, with anti-slip profile.
  • You can screwdriver the heels.
  • The weight is 740 g.

For all of this characteristics it shoes are a good option if you have to buy a new ones. It isn't the best on market but I think is a cheaper option with good results; it only cost 44,50 € on the Internet.

As I said with my hicking jacket, my unique advice is not to buy it on white, because you must stay all the time cleaning it when you come back from the mountain.

I hope you find this information useful for your next buy, and enjoy it for a reasonable price!

CARBON BICYCLES

Hi guys!!!

Nowadays there are more brands which offer carbon options in their bikes, and sometimes they're not much more expensive than the aluminum ones. Of course we're talking about high and middle range bicycles.

One of the main questions that bikers consider is... carbon or aluminum?... The answer is: it depends...

I have used both of them and I can say that in my case I've never had any extremely serious problem, but I'm in favour of carbon bicycles. One of the main reasons why I'm so is the resistance they offer.

In another post I'll try to make a review of my current bicycle, an Ibis Mojo HDR 27.5 but today I'm bringing you a text from Ibis website where they explain how they proced to make carbon fiber bicycles.

ORANGE BIKES

Hi mates!!!

Some bike knowledge...

Orange Bikes from Halifax, West Yorkshire in the North of the UK, has been making mountain bikes since 1988. The bike company started as a side show to the owners main business of producing engineered metal based goods and eventually developed into a full blown business producing quality mountain bikes.

Orange over the years became synonymous with a few famous riders most notably Steve Peat who competed in the DH world cup on board an Orange bike and produced quite a few victories. With time Steve moved on and Orange only being a small brand, had grown a stable following in the UK as people liked the style of its bikes and its approach to how they are made.
We knew that Orange were quite unique in the sense that they are one of only a very few mountain bike companies that produces they whole bike in the UK still, most importantly all their frames. source

why should we write about Orange in this blog?
Well, one of the main dealers in Spain is located in Marina Baixa, specifically in Alfaz del Pi. The bike store is Guijarro and its manager is David Pérez, a nice guy.
I had a chance to test an Orange Five some time ago and although it's not my bicycle I have always thought that it could be my second shot. I love its simpleness and strength, with really attractive design and colours ...

I share with you a factory tour video in Orange Factory, really interesting and curious, where you can see how an Orange is born.

The dealer has shared with me some pictures from the newest Orange Five 27'5, really amazing!!!

I hope I set you closer to a high quality bicycle brand, for many bikers, a reference brand in aluminum mountain bikes.

MAS DE LA CARRASCA; BUDAS AND OMBRÍA DE LOS CASTELLETS

Hi guys, let's continue discovering Marina Baixa...

In this route some friends have joined us to spend the morning doing what we like...

We've started on the main roundabout in Finestrat (we have started others routes on this place before). From here we've left to Castellets, a well-known place to connect other trails. Here it comes the new part of today's route.

It consists in a loop that takes us to visit "Mas de la Carrasca", an old hamlet where all the bikers stop to re-energize ourselves and to look at the incredible landscape

OAKLEY M2 FRAME (CUSTOM)

Today I'm offering you my opinion about Oakley M2 Frame.

I've always worn mid-range sports sunglasses, but due to the intense use of this gadget in outdoor sports, I decided to invest in a high quality model like this one.

They're very light, only 27 gr.

COSTA BLANCA BIKE RACE 2015

Hi you all!

Here you have a great video from Costa Blanca Bike Race 2015, which crosses many of the places that we're talking about on this blog.

In this race took part Sergio Mantecón (MTB World cup competitor in Albstadt, Alemania 2013) and one of the best spanish MTB cyclist.

Although I prefer the non-competitive MTB's part, this race is interesting because it shows the effort from many MTB fans at completing the race.

Enjoy the video and carry on pedaling!
